Thoroughbred Horse Racing

Kentucky's horse racing scene is rich in history. The state's first race track was laid out in Lexington (home of Keeneland and the Bluegrass Stakes) in 1789. But nearly a hundred years later in 1875, Churchill Downs officially opened and began its tradition as “Home of the Kentucky Derby” -- America's world-famous thoroughbred racing and the first leg of the prestigious Triple Crown races.

2008 Breeders' Cup World Championships at Santa Anita Park

The 2008 Breeders' Cup, thoroughbred racing's most prestigious event, consisting of 14 Breeders' Cup races and $25.5 million in purses, will be held on October 24-25, at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California.

But before that, Belmont Stakes winner Da'Tara is going to race in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course while Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown will be racing in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park.

The Kentucky Derby



Kentucky Derby is America's most prestigious and most popular thoroughbred horse racing event, held during the first weekend of May at Churchill Downs. The Derby also marks the beginning of the coveted Triple Crown Races.

Churchill Downs



Home of the Kentucky Derby. The Downs, as it is called today, has become the world's most legendary race track and also operates an off-track betting and training facility called Trackside Louisville.

 

Keeneland Racetrack



Keeneland race track is in the town of Lexington, the world capital of racehorse breeding, where the Bluegrass Stakes are held every year approximately three weeks before the Kentucky Derby. Opened in 1935, Keeneland also provides superior year-round training facilities and conducts yearly race meetings during the months of April and October.

 

Ellis Park



Located in Henderson, Ky., Ellis park offers thoroughbred racing and whole card simulcasting and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN). Home of the Grade III Gardenia Stakes on "Big Four Stakes Saturday," Ellis Park conducts its live race meet from mid-July through Labor Day.

 

Turfway Park



Catch exciting thoroughbred racing at Turfway park all year long. With three major racing season: Winter/Spring Meet from January to April, Fall Meet from September-October, and the Holiday Meet for November-December.

 

Kentucky Downs



Kentucky Downs is located in Franklin, Kentucky near the Kentucky-Tennessee border. Its Fall meet takes place during the month of September with the highlight being the Grade 3 $500,000 Kentucky Cup Turf Festival.

Known for its fast, red clay and one-mile track, The Red Mile is the second oldest harness track in the world. For over 130 years, harness racing’s elite has converged on The Red Mile to stage some of the greatest equine battles in history.

 

Players Bluegrass Downs

Players Bluegrass Downs is a horse track in Paducah, Kentucky featuring harness and quarter horse racing. It opened in 1998 with a grand stand capacity of 2,950.

Thunder Ridge

Thunder Ridge is a horse track in Prestonsburg, Kentucky that features harness racing. The track is also used for motocross racing during its horse racing off-season.
